Competence & Training

Certification

IMCA plays an important role in helping its members ensure and demonstrate the competence of their personnel. Identifying appropriate certification for relevant positions is one of the key aspects of this work.

IMCA's role in direct certification is restricted to certain positions, particularly those where there has been an absence of other bodies offering certification but where a need for independent oversight has been identified. In general, IMCA develops guidance on suitable training and competence assessment for personnel, referring to a variety of other relevant bodies where appropriate.

Offshore diving sector

The offshore diving sector is a good example of this position, where IMCA sets out a number of recognised third-party certificates for basic diver training, covers twelve different positions through its competence guidance, but with direct training and certification for only three positions and a recognised training scheme for one other. The only IMCA-issued certificates are for air diving supervisors, bell diving supervisors and life support technicians. Click here for full details on certification for the offshore diving sector.

Marine (specialist vessel) sector

IMCA Marine Division has a particular focus on dynamic positioning and the specialist vessel operations dependent on such techniques. As part of this, IMCA works with the Nautical Institute and recognises its scheme for certification of DP operators. IMCA has also produced a range of guidance on basic safety and vessel familiarisation training for the wider crew. Click here for full details on training and certification for the marine sector.

Other certification

IMCA does not issue any certificates other than the three listed above for the offshore diving sector. Please refer instead to our training guidance overview or the sector-specific pages linked above and below:

'IMCA' competence certificates

IMCA receives a number of enquiries issued relating to its competence assurance and assessment guidance. As suggested above, these are not IMCA-issued certificates and any enquiries relating to them should be addressed directly to the issuer or employing contractor as appropriate. This topic is addressed in the set of FAQs relating to the competence assurance and assessment guidance.
