Training
Training and education in a wide range of subjects, which IMCA helps to develop, is essential for ensuring personnel are equipped with the diverse skills required by the marine contracting industry now and in the future.
The marine contracting sector has a proud reputation for high-quality training at every stage of an individual's career. IMCA publishes guidance that helps its contractor members, universities, schools and other training establishments world-wide continue to deliver.
The Competence & Training core activity is responsible for overseeing a wide range of work in relation to training. This can include development of guidance through the TCPC committee itself, or overseeing work by specialists in the technical divisions.
Guidance relevant to all IMCA members is produced via the core committees, covering topics such as basic safety and induction training for marine crew and non-marine personnel alike, assessor training, use of simulators and other topics.
IMCA's four technical divisions also publish guidance based on the unique expertise combined from members' operations in each sector around the world - visit the divisional pages for more details:
For convenience, a summary of IMCA training guidance issued across the various publication series is also available.
Course approval
In general, IMCA's role in training is limited to provision of guidance on course content, entry level requirements and related topics, with actual courses and training provision developed and offered by individual training establishments or overseen by other relevant bodies.
For specific diving-related positions, where the need for independent oversight has been clearly identified by contractors and no third-party system existed, IMCA has developed audit and approval schemes. Please visit our diving-related training pages for more details.
Working with training establishments
IMCA has a special membership category for training establishments to help facilitate dialogue, communicating well the needs and expectations of the industry with regard to training outcomes, identifying appropriate syllabi and keeping such organisations updated on technical developments and IMCA guidance.
