Knut Boe

From the President - May 2007

Last month we were brutally reminded about the risks which exist in our marine industry. I am referring to the tragic accident which occurred close to the Shetlands a few weeks ago resulting in the loss of eight lives and a vessel. Our thoughts go to the survivors and relatives left behind after this tragic accident.

A brand new vessel, an experienced operator, an apparently standard operation and still an accident can happen. This catastrophe should serve as a reminder to all of our members that in our safety efforts the identification of hazards is an everlasting activity which is never complete.

IMCA will concentrate on identifying any new areas within the industry where efforts can be directed. We will continue to focus on developing new industry guidelines as well as being the catalyst for creating dialogue between members to contribute to the health of the industry.

Our key focus areas for the year are to communicate better the principles we apply for self regulation, to continue our effort to promote more equitable terms between client and contractor and last, but not least, to contribute to closing the gap we, as an industry, will experience in the years to come concerning skills shortages.

IMCA is entering into a very busy term on the communication and promotion side. The reception at the Wellington in April was a great success, gathering a number of key industry officials for an informal get-together. For the first time IMCA is a supporter of and exhibitor at OTC (the Houston-based Offshore Technology Conference), an important step to further strengthen our position in this region. Our golf day and the midsummer charity ball are coming up during the next month and will be excellent opportunities for meeting other IMCA members and to exchange views on our industry in an informal and relaxed atmosphere.
