IMCA APPOINTS ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL ADVISER

The former Director of Education and Training at The Nautical Institute, Ian Giddings, has been recruited as a Technical Adviser, joining an increasingly busy technical team at the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA). He took up his appointment at the beginning of December.

"We’re delighted to welcome Ian. His recent experience at the Nautical Institute; his spell as a DP operator on board a semi-submersible accommodation vessel; a period as a marine consultant/surveyor; his 14 years as a Team Leader in Marine Operations at Aberdeen College; and an equal amount of time at sea at the start of his working life stand him in very good stead for the challenges ahead," says Hugh Williams, Chief Executive of IMCA. "He will be working primarily to support the work of our Marine Division alongside our other technical advisers, who assist Jane Bugler, our Technical Director in the delivery of the association's work programme.

"All our efforts are aimed at raising technical and safety standards through the development of good practice guidance based on members' cumulative experience, sharing of lessons learned from incidents and representation of members' common interest to regulators, clients and client bodies; and other organisations. Our workload is increasing in line with its rapidly growing membership (over 350 members from 43 countries) - Ian will very quickly realise just how delighted we are that he has joined us, for we have identified a number of tasks that will benefit from his specialist skills."

Notes to Editors (common)

  • IMCA is an international association with over 450 members in more than 50 countries, representing offshore, marine and underwater engineering companies. IMCA has four technical divisions, covering marine/specialist vessel operations, offshore diving, hydrographic survey and remote systems and ROVs, plus geographic sections for the Americas Deepwater, Asia-Pacific, Europe & Africa and Middle East & India regions, as well as a core focus on safety, the environment, competence and training. IMCA seeks to promote its members' common interests, to resolve industry-wide issues and to provide an authoritative voice for its members.
  • IMCA publishes some 200 guidance notes and technical reports. These have been developed over the years and are widely distributed. They are a definition of what IMCA stands for, including widely recognised diving and ROV codes of practice, DP documentation, marine good practice guidance, the Common Marine Inspection Document, safety recommendation, outline training syllabi and the IMCA competence scheme guidance. In addition to the range of printed guidance documents, IMCA also produces safety promotional materials, circulates information notes and safety flashes.
  • Judith Patten is here to help you if you want any additional information on IMCA; would like to discuss a feature article; want to organise interviews with key members of the IMCA team, etc.
