IMCA Activities

Core Activities

The Association has two core activities which carry out work relevant to all IMCA members:

  • The Safety, Environment & Legislation (SEL) Core Activity addresses aspects relevant to the broad offshore contracting sector. Included in its remit is working to improve offshore safety, assisting contractors in achieving and demonstrating good environmental performance and monitoring, briefing and lobbying relating to world-wide, regional and national regulatory developments.
Particular deliverables include the safety flash system for disseminating important lessons learned from incidents across the industry, development of safety promotion materials and a range of guidance documentation, as well as organising numerous events, each focusing on a particular aspect of its own work and members' activities. • The Training, Certification & Personnel Competence (TCPC) Core Activity was established to develop a framework within which IMCA's contractor members could demonstrate the competence of their personnel working in safety-critical positions offshore.
This was achieved through the publication of its competence assurance and assessment guidance, implementation of which remains a key focus. The TCPC core committee also oversees IMCA's work on training and certification issues, often in conjunction with the relevant technical division(s), and plays an important role in careers promotion activities. Technical Divisions

IMCA also has four technical divisions, each covering a specific area of members' activities. Members join one or more divisions appropriate to their area(s) of work. The divisions are as follows:

  • The Diving Division promotes safe practice in the offshore diving industry. It covers all aspects of equipment, operations and personnel related to offshore diving operations (including atmospheric diving systems).
The decades of cumulative experience of IMCA members are brought together in the IMCA International Code of Practice for Offshore Diving and an extensive set of associated guidance aimed at aiding safe and efficient operations on a world-wide basis. • The Marine Division covers all aspects of vessel operations and marine equipment. Focusing on dynamic positioning, other key areas of interest are position reference equipment, reliability of systems, thruster-assisted systems and general marine construction issues.
As part of the above extensive work programme, the division holds an annual seminar, each year publishes a report on dynamically positioned (DP) failure incidents, produces a variety of technical guidance and study reports, as well as playing a key role in personnel competence related to specialist vessels, with guidance accepted by IMO. • The Offshore Survey Division is concerned with all aspects of equipment, operations and personnel relating to offshore survey operations.
Key areas of recent work include competence standards for safety-critical personnel involved in the offshore survey industry, the development of technical standards aimed at enhancing the efficiency of operations across the sector and a concerted effort to raise the profile of the industry. • The Remote Systems & ROV Division is concerned with all aspects of equipment, operations and personnel related to remotely controlled systems (including ROVs) used in support of marine activities.
The decades of cumulative experience of IMCA members are brought together in the division's set of guidance, aimed at aiding safe and efficient operations on a world-wide basis. For full information and the latest news from the division, click here.

Regional Sections
