IMCA Structure » Core Activities

All IMCA members benefit from the work of IMCA's two core activities - SEL and Competence & Training - plus other work items co-ordinated directly under the IMCA Overall Management Committee.

Find out more details below:

SEL

Safety, Environment & Legislation (SEL)

The SEL activity has a broad work programme on issues relevant to the association's members:

  • Safety - overseeing the association's work to help its members further improve the safety performance of the marine contracting industry. This work includes development of good practice guidance, publication of a range of safety promotion materials and co-ordination of incident reporting/safety flash systems and monitoring through an annual safety statistics exercise. Also covers health issues.
  • Security - addressing security, piracy and terrorism concerns through identification of risks, sharing of alerts and development of industry guidance
  • Environment - reviewing environmental performance with guidance on monitoring and standards, provision of briefing and inclusion in event programmes
  • Legislation - monitoring, briefing, consulting and lobbying in relation to world-wide, regional and national regulatory developments on behalf of members
Competence & Training

Competence & Training

The TCPC activity addresses the issues relating to people in the marine contracting industry, both directly and by co-ordinating work elsewhere in IMCA's committee structure where relevant:

  • Competence assurance and assessment - helping contractors ensure and demonstrate competence of individuals working in safety-critical positions, including working with agencies and freelance personnel on how their records of experience, training and assessment can be integrated into contractors' schemes
  • Education and training - to identify and promote the industry's needs, developing syllabi as required and working with training establishments and academia
  • Recruitment and careers - raising awareness of the marine contracting industry and the varied, exciting opportunities it offers at all levels - technician through engineering to management - and helping connect members with potential recruits
  • Certification - for specific diving-related positions IMCA runs certification schemes to assist its members in identifying suitably trained and experienced personnel. IMCA also helps identify suitable qualifications for other roles where appropriate.
Contracting Issues

While not an official 'core activity', IMCA also works to raise awareness and promote dialogue on contracting issues that are relevant to all members, including setting out contracting principles, publishing discussion documents and developing generic contract templates.
