Key Environmental Concerns for Marine Contractors
17 November 1999, Aberdeen, UK

IMCA's Safety & Legislation [now Safety, Environment & Legislation] Management Committee organised the second IMCA Environmental Seminar in Aberdeen on 17 November 1999, following a successful seminar organised in London the previous year.

At this seminar, key aspects of chemical management and disposal were addressed by Koos Visser, former Head of Health, Safety & Environment at Shell International. Chemical compliance in the marine environment was discussed by John Hall and Louise Smith of Halliburton Subsea Systems.

Simon Harbord of Conoco, Vice-Chairman of UKOOA's Environmental Quality Committee, and John Kearns, ex-HSE Manager of BHP International, provided insights into the chief expectations on contractors' environmental management systems. A number of common factors between the ISM Code and ISO 14001 were identified.

A government's expectations of progressive improvements in environmental performance were highlighted by Simon Toole, Director of Environment Development & Decommissioning at the UK Department of Trade & Industry.

Environmental concerns are playing an increasingly important role in marine projects and so this seminar was both timely and pertinent.

A set of summary notes is available to members on request from the IMCA offices.
