Safety Excellence in a Global Environment
For the first time IMCA's annual safety seminar took place outside Europe - at the InterContinental Hotel in Abu Dhabi, UAE. This well attended international event built on the solid experience and success of the previous events held at European sports venues over the previous five years. Over 120 delegates, drawn as ever from both onshore and offshore management, gathered to promote safety excellence in the global environment.
This year's seminar featured a safety share fair at which members brought and displayed samples of their own safety promotional material. This was well received, and there was much sharing of ideas and safety messages. In addition, a dramatic seatbelt 'Convincer' was available for those who felt they needed convincing to wear a seat belt when in a car or taxi - also providing a good reminder of the importance and value of small safety precautions.
The extended two-day programme, longer than in previous years, featured a wide range of presentations on a number of subjects, including the development of risk assessment tools, corporate manslaughter and corporate safety responsibility, working at height and working in confined spaces, the effects of marine operations on the environment, and important personal lessons following a fatality, as well as round table discussions on such subjects as how best to spread lessons learnt and how to share information gained on ROV operations with the scientific community.
The wide range of thought-provoking subjects discussed has generated actions for future work by IMCA and overall has set the tone for future annual safety seminars, as IMCA continues its global journey promoting safety excellence.
A CD bringing together the full set of presentations and reports on the discussions has been circulated to delegates and other members, with additional copies available on request.
