Safety, Environment & Legislation (SEL)

From the President - February 2001
Special Edition

One of the primary objectives of IMCA is to strive to raise health and safety standards across our industry to provide the safest working environment possible for our member companies and their employees. A key tool in this effort has been the use of IMCA for the prompt distribution of safety flashes across the industry of incidents that pose a latent hazard to other members.

There have been two unfortunate accidents recently where it could be argued that if this tool had worked effectively then severe injury could have been avoided.

On investigation we have found that the relevant information on previous incidents had not been provided to IMCA and obviously the system had not been effectively used.

In my position as President of IMCA I request that you encourage, within your own organisation, active and prompt reporting of incidents and in turn I undertake that IMCA will disseminate the information, in the form of safety flashes, promptly across the industry.

Any reports will, of course, be anonymised of company, work site and other sensitive information.

It is encumbent upon all of us to provide the safest working environment possible for our employees.

John Smith, Halliburton Subsea
IMCA President 2001-2
