IMCA's Diving Division promotes safe practice in the offshore diving industry. It covers all aspects of equipment, operations and personnel related to offshore diving operations.
The decades of cumulative experience of IMCA members are brought together in an extensive set of guidance aimed at aiding safe and efficient operations on a world-wide basis.
The division's various activities are outlined below and detailed on the pages linked therefrom and in the left-hand navigation panel.
Work Programme
In line with the Association's overall and strategic objectives, each year the world-wide divisional management committee sets out a programme of specific projects and objectives which it will work towards achieving. Click here for more details on the current programme.
IMCA International Code of Practice for Offshore Diving
The IMCA International Code of Practice for Offshore Diving brings together the key points of the division's guidance, aiming to provide a safe foundation for operations world-wide, particularly in those areas without national regulations. Since the code's publication, the uptake by clients, implementation by contractors and reference by regulators and other bodies has been extremely strong. For more details on the code, click here.
Equipment Inspection & Test Regime
Through wide consultation of contractors, clients and regulators, IMCA's predecessor AODC set in place a regime for the inspection and testing of diving plant and equipment, including a code of practice and associated guidance note. IMCA has undertaken a thorough review, with each of these key documents updated. For details on the regime, click here.
Personnel Initiatives
- Training & Certification - IMCA operates certification schemes for certain offshore positions and audits training establishments running preparatory courses in those areas. For details of these schemes, click here; for details of currently-approved training establishments, click here.
- Careers Information - IMCA receives a number of enquiries from those interested in working offshore and has developed a number of guides providing further information.
- Competence Assurance & Assessment - IMCA has developed a framework of guidance on personnel competence to help its contractor members ensure and demonstrate the competence of those working offshore in safety-critical positions. Click here for more details on how the guidance applies in the offshore diving sector.
- Medical Examination of Divers - Ensuring that a diver is fit to dive is essential for the good health of the diver (and also, obviously, for the success of a diving operation). As even a minor illness, such as the common cold or a dental problem, can have serious effects on a diver under pressure, let alone more serious health problems. While not involved in the approval of such doctors, IMCA has provided its members with guidance to aid them in appointing suitable medical doctors.
