Personnel Initiatives for the Offshore Diving Industry

A key factor in ensuring safe and efficient diving operations is making sure that personnel are sufficiently trained, competent and safety-aware. To this end, IMCA runs a number of initiatives to aid its contractor members in achieving these aims.

Training

Both in connection with its certification schemes and as stand-alone training courses, IMCA is involved in the auditing and recognition of certain diving-related training courses. Click here for further information.

Certification

IMCA has been operating certification schemes since the mid-1980s for certain positions (Offshore Diving Supervisors and Life Support Technicians) in the offshore diving industry. Click here for further information.

Competence

IMCA developed its guidance on competence assurance and assessment to aid its contractor members in ensuring and demonstrating the competence of their safety-critical personnel. Click here for full information on how the guidance applies to positions in the offshore diving sector.

Medicals

Ensuring that a diver is fit to dive is essential for the good health of the diver (and also, obviously, for the success of a diving operation). As even a minor illness, such as the common cold or a dental problem, can have serious effects on a diver under pressure, let alone more serious health problems, the IMCA International Code of Practice, among other guidance, requires divers to have valid medical certificates issued by suitable doctors, for which an annual medical is required. In 2001 the UK Health & Safety Executive withdrew its scheme for recognition of doctors outside the UK. IMCA, while it is not involved in the approval of such doctors, has provided its members with guidance to aid them in appointing suitable medical doctors - click here for details.
