Certification in the Offshore Diving Industry

Recognition of Diver Training Certificates

IMCA is not directly involved in the training of divers, although its members are obviously concerned with ensuring the proper training and competence of such safety-critical personnel. Under the IMCA International Code of Practice for Offshore Diving (IMCA D 014), IMCA recognises a list of diver training certificates for those working offshore world-wide, set out in an information available for downloading and summarised on this site - click here for full details.

IMCA Certification

IMCA (and its predecessor, AODC) has been operating certification schemes since the mid 1980s for certain positions in the offshore diving industry.

These lay down minimum requirements for certification in each position covered, including:

  • diving experience;
  • basic theoretical training;
  • supervised 'hands on' experience offshore;
  • a theory examination, set and marked independently of employing contractors by IMCA.

The positions covered by the schemes are as follows:

Pay grading certificates for senior dive technicians previously issued by IMCA and AODC have now been withdrawn. Such certificates were issued solely to indicating the rate of pay a person was entitled to receive in relation to the North Sea Diving Industry Agreement and to facilitate the movement of personnel from one company to another. They were not intended for any other purpose or for wider use and were withdrawn to end the possibility for confusion with certificates of competence.

Candidates for IMCA examinations need to be put forward by nominated individuals within their companies, who should have the relevant forms, fee schedules and contact details. Should you need to make direct contact, please click here for further details.

Withdrawn Certificates

IMCA maintains a list of withdrawn diving supervisor and LST certificates. Anyone with any concern regarding a certificate presented to them should refer to this list and, where necessary, contact the Certification Schemes Administrator - Mrs Vicki Graham. For further details on making contact, please click here.
