Dive Technician Training and Certification

Dive technicians are generally responsible for the operation and maintenance of various diving systems.

Training

IMCA has produced guidance on dive technician training at three levels - technician, senior technician (surface supplied) and senior technician (all systems) - in publication IMCA D 001. This publication is currently withdrawn pending update.

Certification and competence

The IMCA guidance on competence assurance and assessment sets out how assessments of individuals' competence in relation to specific required and recommended aspects of their skill set can be undertaken and recorded.

IMCA (and its predecessor AODC) used to issue pay grading certificates for senior dive technicians. These were issued solely to indicate the rate of pay a person was entitled to receive in relation to the North Sea Diving Industry Agreement and to facilitate the movement of personnel from one signatory company to another. They were not intended for any other purpose and were withdrawn in 2005 to end the possibility for confusion with certificates of competence. A note explaining the withdrawal is available for downloading below.
