IMCA Marine Division

IMCA's Marine Division covers all aspects of vessel operations and marine equipment. Focusing on dynamic positioning and general marine construction, other key areas of interest are offshore lifting operations, position reference equipment, thrusters and system reliability.

The division's various activities are outlined below and detailed on the pages linked therefrom and in the left-hand navigation panel.

Work Programme

In line with the Association's overall and strategic objectives, each year the world-wide divisional management committee sets out a programme of specific projects and objectives which it will work towards achieving. Click here for more details on the current programme.

Guidelines for the Design & Operation of Dynamically Positioned Vessels

One of the division's key guidance documents is this widely-used and referenced document on the design and operation of the dynamically positioned (DP) specialist vessels operated by its members. Covering both the basic principles to be applied to all DP vessels and the specific requirements for eight separate types of vessel, the document was recently revised to ensure its currency and to reflect international developments, including the adoption and uptake of a number of key IMCA Marine Division documents.

Vessel Auditing & Inspection

IMCA's Marine Division has worked for a number of years on documents aimed at providing guidelines, standard formats and templates for vessel audits and trials. These are aimed at aiding operators and clients with a consistent interface for documentation, minimising unnecessary variation in requirements and avoiding multiple audits. Other Technical Reports - In addition to those areas listed above, IMCA's Marine Division commissions authoritative reports on subjects of interest to specialist vessel operators, including operational guidance (particularly in the most safety-critical areas) and on the risk, reliability and functionality of key items of equipment, particularly items of navigational equipment and thrusters.

Personnel Initiatives - The division has produced a range of guidance on personnel issues, including its IMO-recognised guidance on 'The Training & Experience of Key DP Personnel' and implementation of IMCA's guidance on competence assurance and assessment in the marine/specialist vessel sector.

Annual Seminar

IMCA Marine Division has held an annual seminar each year since 1992, in various key locations for the offshore industry around the globe. These events bring together delegates from around the world - including onshore managers, vessel crew, designers, consultants, suppliers and regulators - for presentations on: the latest technologies and operational developments; operational experience, particular in emerging markets, with their new environments; 'hot topics' where informed debate by those active and interested in the industry has helped reach consensus and has fed back into the production of best practice guidance. Click here for full details on this year's seminar and previous events.

Reference Information

The division has produced an extensive guide which provides an Introduction to Dynamic Positioning, which has been widely reported and received much favourable comment.
