A Review of Marine Laser Positioning Systems
Part 1: MK IV FanbeamŪ and Part 2: CyScan
|
An important part of the work programme of IMCA Marine Division is the production of independent technical reports which assess an extensive range of vessel equipment available from numerous manufacturers, particular with regard to functionality, reliability and suitability for the various specialist operations undertaken by vessel operators active in the offshore sector.
Dynamically positioned vessels are used widely throughout the industry. They rely on accurate position reference systems to ensure the ability to operate continuously and safely. Marine lasers are one specific type of position reference system and the latest systems are addressed in this guidance.
Adding to a number of related documents, this guidance reviews the MDL Fanbeam and the CyScan systems*, describing the current systems along with installation, maintenance requirements and training recommendations. The advantages and disadvantages of both systems are considered, along with the likely failure modes.
In producing the report, IMCA has been assisted with technical information from the system's manufacturer, at the same time as drawing on the practical operational experience of members currently using the system.
