IMCA Offshore Survey Division

Personnel Initiatives for the Offshore Survey Sector

Members of IMCA's Offshore Survey Division have produced a wealth of information on activities in the area, to raise the profile of offshore surveying, with the highlight of promotional material being the Graphical Guide to Hydrographic Survey. This is also available in printed form and has been distributed already to a number of key educational establishments for display as a poster and also printed as a leaflet incorporating a careers guide.

Training & Education

IMCA's offshore survey contractor members are concerned with ensuring that basic offshore surveying skills are properly covered in undergraduate and post-graduate courses, in order for their recruits to be well equipped for their new roles. The Offshore Survey Division has also compiled a dossier of courses run world-wide in offshore survey, survey electronics and the marine sciences, to help assist those interested in entering the industry to find an appropriate college or university course. Competence

The Offshore Survey Division is supporting its members in implementing IMCA's guidance on competence assurance and assessment. Appraisal documentation has been produced and personnel agencies included in wide-ranging discussions and briefing on the scheme and its implementation across the marine contracting sector. For further details on competence matters for offshore survey contractors, click here.

With much of the sector's workforce employed through agencies, IMCA's contractor members have been keen to involve such organisations in the development and implementation of the scheme. A number of successful workshops have been held and valuable feedback has been taken on board. We are pleased to welcome a number of personnel agencies into IMCA membership, recognising the important role they play in ensuring the competence of contractors' personnel.

Careers

A well-received presentation on the sector has been developed, which has been presented to a number of student meetings by senior surveyors from the industry, keen to impart to those undergoing formal training in the wider geography/ surveying area the range of opportunities available to them offshore.

A number of careers guides have also been developed, which outline the role, background and training requirements, professional career progression and employment details for various positions, including hydrographic surveyor, engineer, technician, geophysicist and cartographer.
