IMCA COLLECTING SAFETY STATISTICS

The annual task of collecting safety statistics is underway at IMCA (the International Marine Contractors Association. For the fifth year running the Association is collecting data for its annual report of these statistics. Once again, this will cover fatalities, time worked, lost time incidents and their frequency.

"Although only one indicator of health, safety and environmental performance, accident statistics are nonetheless seen as providing a useful insight into corporate performance in this area," explains Jane Bugler, IMCA's Technical Director. To build on this work our Safety, Environment and Legislation Core Committee wants us to develop a wider suite of safety and environment indicators in future years. If promoted to clients and adopted by members then such indicators could reduce the high reliance on Lost Time Incident statistics as the main judge of safety.

Information from IMCA members for the 2000 analysis should be sent to Jane Bugler by the end of March 2001.

IMCA continues to circulate Safety Flashes. These summarise key safety matters and incidents, allowing wider dissemination of lessons learned from such events. The IMCA Safety, Environment and Legislation Core Committee is eager to encourage more members to contribute information and for wider dissemination of the flashes to take place. Anonymity is a key factor of the Safety Flashes and IMCA is eager to hear of all relevant incidents such as those involving automatically closing doors.

Notes to Editors (common)

  • IMCA is an international association with well over 800 members in 60 countries, as at September 2011, representing offshore, marine and underwater engineering companies. IMCA has four technical divisions, covering marine/specialist vessel operations, offshore diving, hydrographic survey and remote systems and ROVs, plus geographic sections for the Asia-Pacific, South America, Europe & Africa, Middle East & India and Central & North America regions. As well as a core focus on safety, the environment, competence and training. IMCA seeks to promote its members' common interests, to resolve industry-wide issues and to provide an authoritative voice for its members.
  • IMCA publishes some 200 guidance notes and technical reports. These have been developed over the years and are widely distributed. They are a definition of what IMCA stands for, including widely recognised diving and ROV codes of practice, DP documentation, marine good practice guidance, the Common Marine Inspection Document, safety recommendation, outline training syllabi and the IMCA competence scheme guidance. In addition to the range of printed guidance documents, IMCA also produces safety promotional materials, circulates information notes and safety flashes.
  • Judith Patten is here to help you if you want any additional information on IMCA; would like to discuss a feature article; want to organise interviews with key members of the IMCA team, etc.
