CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN MARINE SURVEY AND MARINE CONSTRUCTION - IMCA POINTS THE WAY
Two recent publications from IMCA - The International Marine Contractors Association - point the way to career opportunities and paths in the marine survey and wider marine construction industries. Their contents provide food for thought for those considering career changes, new graduates, and students in their final years at school faced with making decisions about career paths and further education.
The new Employment Opportunities in Marine Construction leaflet highlights employment opportunities and training needs in all areas of marine construction. It is being distributed free of charge to schools, colleges of further education and careers services. It will also be much in evidence on IMCA's stand at Offshore Europe 2001(Stand no: 373) where the Association plays an important role in the organised educational programme. This programme involves visits by up to 300 school students using the event to help them make decisions about the next stage of their education and their ultimate career path.
IMCA represents the interests of more than 180 international companies, based in 30 countries, providing marine support to offshore activities so the leaflet is far-ranging with brief descriptions of the work of marine vessel operators, diving contractors, marine construction companies, remotely operated vehicle contractors, offshore survey companies complemented by information on training needs. IMCA also publishes 'I Want to be a Diver', 'I Want to be a Life Support Technician', 'I Want to Work with ROVs' and 'Careers in Hydrographic Surveying'. Further information is available at www.imca-int.com/careers and from IMCA.
The second publication, the new IMCA training course dossier covers offshore survey, survey electronics and the marine sciences and aims to raise awareness of career opportunities in these sectors and of courses run by universities and colleges around the world. Covering twelve countries, it includes in-depth analysis of the courses available at a wide range of educational establishments in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, Trinidad & Tobago, UK, and USA.
"We are very grateful to all who have contributed to the guide, and welcome updates and additional information in order to keep it alive and serving its purpose as a vital tool to those planning career paths in the hydrographic survey industry," explains IMCA's Chief Executive, Tony Read. The dossier costs £10 but is available free on request by those wishing to study in this field. Further information is available at www.imca-int.com/survey
IMCA members operate a scheme for safety-critical staff positions, which sets out the competencies required for the various levels and positions within the member companies. This demonstrates their willingness to provide appropriate ongoing training and assessment of staff throughout their working career in the industry. All members of staff carry a record of competence as they progress through their careers.

They are a definition of what IMCA stands for, including widely recognised diving and ROV codes of practice, DP documentation, marine good practice guidance, the Common Marine Inspection Document, safety recommendation, outline training syllabi and the IMCA competence scheme guidance. In addition to the range of printed guidance documents, IMCA also produces safety promotional materials, circulates information notes and safety flashes.
