IMCA EXTENDS ITS REACH

The increasing internationalisation of IMCA - the International Marine Contractors Association - with its four regional sections, Americas Deepwater, Asia-Pacific, Europe & Africa and Middle East & India has led to a review of the association's approach to membership of affiliate companies of existing members.

"Communication is probably the most important keyword in IMCA's vocabulary," explains Chief Executive, Hugh Williams. " We need to communicate good information to the right people, both amongst members and outside IMCA, at the right time. Historically each IMCA member company, and we have over 200 member companies in 30 countries, has only had individuals nominated as IMCA contacts in one location.

"Because of this, during the internationalisation of IMCA over recent years, we have not had good points of contact in all of the offices of member companies, which are often based in a different regional section to their parent/the existing member company. With the advent of our regional sections, uptake of new members and the increase in section-specific work we are eager to extend the reach of IMCA and engage people in these 'affiliate' offices.

"We are now extending the entitlement to reduced-fee 'affiliate' memberships to companies in every one of our five IMCA membership categories - large international contractors and/or vessel owners; international or national contractors and/or vessel owners; suppliers of equipment or services; training establishments/personnel agencies; and non-voting Corresponding members (a category that includes oil companies, other trade associations, government departments/agencies). This will ensure that we have points of contact in the active office of member companies in each of our regional sections, to enhance communication and aid well-informed participation in IMCA activities, particularly at the regional section level."

IMCA is using the term 'affiliate offices' to include subsidiaries, sister companies, daughter companies or affiliates of an existing member. The first to join IMCA would normally be deemed to be the 'parent member', with each subsequent affiliated company (whether smaller or larger) then joining as an 'affiliate member'.

Notes to Editors (common)

  • IMCA is an international association with well over 800 members in 60 countries, as at September 2011, representing offshore, marine and underwater engineering companies. IMCA has four technical divisions, covering marine/specialist vessel operations, offshore diving, hydrographic survey and remote systems and ROVs, plus geographic sections for the Asia-Pacific, South America, Europe & Africa, Middle East & India and Central & North America regions. As well as a core focus on safety, the environment, competence and training. IMCA seeks to promote its members' common interests, to resolve industry-wide issues and to provide an authoritative voice for its members.
  • IMCA publishes some 200 guidance notes and technical reports. These have been developed over the years and are widely distributed. They are a definition of what IMCA stands for, including widely recognised diving and ROV codes of practice, DP documentation, marine good practice guidance, the Common Marine Inspection Document, safety recommendation, outline training syllabi and the IMCA competence scheme guidance. In addition to the range of printed guidance documents, IMCA also produces safety promotional materials, circulates information notes and safety flashes.
  • Judith Patten is here to help you if you want any additional information on IMCA; would like to discuss a feature article; want to organise interviews with key members of the IMCA team, etc.
