IMCA ESTABLISHES NEW EUROPE & AFRICA SECTION First Event looks at Security Offshore West Africa
IMCA - the International Marine Contractors Association - the trade association that represents the interests of marine contractors around the world has established a Europe & Africa Section (it already has Americas Deepwater, Asia-Pacific and Middle East & India Sections). The new section is being run by a steering committee with Robin Davies of Subsea 7 and Ian Stevenson of Technip as its Chairman and Vice-Chairman. They will work towards starting up and steering the Section with the IMCA secretariat. Elections for the Section Chairman and Vice-Chairman will be held in due course.
Like the three other IMCA regional Sections, the Europe & Africa Section has as its objectives the maintenance of good and safe operating practices; promotion of good practices by contractors, clients, suppliers and authorities; and exchange of information on good practice and lessons learnt.
"It may seem strange for an organisations whose headquarters are in Europe to set up a 'local' section after three others have been set up with the longest of those operating for a number of years," says IMCA's Chief Executive, Hugh Williams. "Europe has traditionally been the 'home' of our core committees and four technical division management committees. Modern forms of communication such as video conferencing have ensured that members' views from around the world (we have over 200 member companies in 30 countries) are taken on board in meetings of these key committees. So now, Europe and Africa (which shares the same time zones) has a Section devoted to their particular needs."
Mr Williams cites looking at EU issues; 'Construction All Risks' insurance; the Standard Marine Construction Contract; decommissioning; and offshore renewable energy opportunities as areas that may well come under the Europe & Africa Section spotlight. The first event scheduled for the new Section reflects another key issue - security in West Africa. The Security Seminar will be held Thursday 25 September 2003 in Paris, in conjunction with the first meeting of the Europe & Africa Section taking place on the same day.
West Africa Security Seminar
The one day members-only security seminar aimed at IMCA contractor members likely to be working offshore West Africa and corresponding members (oil companies) operating in the region, is being held to raise and discuss highly topical issues of security when working offshore West Africa and will cover marine security (including kidnap threat and management); logistics, travel security and personnel movement; local community relationships and management; health management; security in port (precautions and response). There will be a series of short presentations, panel discussions and Q&A sessions. Others interested from around the world will also be welcome.
Further information on the Security Seminar and on the Europe & Africa Section, to which all member companies situated in Europe & Africa are automatic members, is available from IMCA
Notes to Editors (common)
- IMCA is an international association with well over 800 members in 60 countries, as at September 2011, representing offshore, marine and underwater engineering companies. IMCA has four technical divisions, covering marine/specialist vessel operations, offshore diving, hydrographic survey and remote systems and ROVs, plus geographic sections for the Asia-Pacific, South America, Europe & Africa, Middle East & India and Central & North America regions. As well as a core focus on safety, the environment, competence and training. IMCA seeks to promote its members' common interests, to resolve industry-wide issues and to provide an authoritative voice for its members.
- IMCA publishes some 200 guidance notes and technical reports. These have been developed over the years and are widely distributed. They are a definition of what IMCA stands for, including widely recognised diving and ROV codes of practice, DP documentation, marine good practice guidance, the Common Marine Inspection Document, safety recommendation, outline training syllabi and the IMCA competence scheme guidance. In addition to the range of printed guidance documents, IMCA also produces safety promotional materials, circulates information notes and safety flashes.
