Local Issues » Decommissioning
IMCA was born and grew up in the North Sea but has come a long way since, so it is appropriate that the new Europe & Africa Section should be leading the way on addressing issues relating to the mature offshore oil and gas industry - in particular, decommissioning of offshore installations. Observers have noted that a large part of the world's planned expenditure on decommissioning will be in the North Sea and that the first really challenging, deeper water, large structures to be removed will also be in this area.
Following a well-attended seminar in Aberdeen in June 2004, it was agreed to establish a workgroup to look at the particular issues faced by those contractors involved in the decommissioning market. The workgroup helped to develop an IMCA position paper on the subject, setting out for members the various issues related to decommissioning and providing a basis for discussions with clients, regulators and other related organisations.
Members in the region are invited to notify the secretariat of any specific issues in this area for future work by IMCA.
