Spotlight on DP Accreditation Scheme

Recap: Scheme launched 1 May 2019 as an output from IMCA’s Marine Division Management Committee

Aims of Scheme: Improve consistency and conduct of DP Trials, set an industry recognised level of knowledge.

Scheme Aimed at: DP Practitioners who are responsible for developing, witnessing, and reporting DP Trials and those responsible for the management of the DP assurance processes

Despite issues and interruptions to the current work programme and examinations schedule due to COVID-19 good progress has been made during the first year.

Has the scheme made a difference in the DP consulting industry? We believe it has and we know others agree. We have had positive feedback from vessel operators, owners and vessel charterers. A key achievement is that some vessel owners and charterers now only accept IMCA accredited personnel for their assurance needs. A great achievement for us.

Have we managed to achieve what we set out to do? Yes, we have, the application process is working well and we have successfully managed exams in many locations worldwide. The interest in the scheme remains high and we have received a very high level of enquiries from around the globe.

Is there more to be done? Yes absolutely. The exam itself has been reviewed and the question count expanded in light of updated or new guidance both from IMCA and the wider industry, for example the IMO. The scheme is robust, yet flexible and, with the support of IMCA's Marine DP committee, we will continually review, enhance and improve moving forward.
