There has been an increasing global emphasis on the importance of using competent personnel – something that is continuing despite economic swings in the last few years. The offshore construction industry needs a lot more personnel and the emphasis on them being, or gaining further training to become, competent is growing all the time. Contractors are called upon by clients, regulators and others to demonstrate that the individuals working for them, particularly in safety-critical roles, are competent.
The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA), working through and in consultation with its members, has developed an extensive framework of guidance that its members can use to establish or enhance their own in-house schemes, with recognised industry criteria and templates for assessment and record keeping.
IMCA has held a number of workshops on the subject of personnel competence, both helping to shape the development of its guidance framework and subsequently addressing issues relating to implementation and more general competence topics, and the next in the series will take place in Dubai, UAE on 25 September 2012, the date of the association’s next Middle East & India Section Meeting.
This free competence workshop, which is open to members and non-members alike, will begin at 1300 and end at 1630, and aims to bring together the key stakeholders – contractors, clients, individuals, training establishments and personnel agencies – to address particular issues, facilitate communication and help ensure these parties work well together to ensure a properly skilled and competent workforce.
