IMCA’s DP Expertise sought from Houston to Singapore

Published on 6 October 2022

The International Marine Contractors Association’s (IMCA’s) expertise is acknowledged and sought all over the world; and its guidance, safety flashes, and dynamic positioning (DP) event reporting is followed by a global audience.

Technical Adviser – Marine, Richard Purser’s involvement with two DP conferences within the space of five weeks and some 10,000 miles apart, exemplifies the interest in IMCA’s expertise and what IMCA is able to share on this subject.

On 11 October, Richard Purser will be speaking at the MTS DP Conference in Houston on ‘DP Station Keeping Trends and Concerns’; and then, just over a month later, he and his Technical Adviser colleague, Graeme Reid, will be running a morning session covering different aspects of DP at the 10th Dynamic Positioning Asia Conference and Exhibition 2022 (Singapore, 16-17 November). This event (IMCA is proud to be a supporting organisation) is organised by Petromin and Mediacomz International in partnership with the Marine Technology Society Dynamic Positioning Committee.

As Richard Purser, Technical Adviser Marine explained:

“DP is in IMCA’s DNA, with our heritage going back to 1989 in this area. It is a topic that is relevant to members of all our technical divisions – Diving, Marine, (including Marine Renewable Energy), Remote Systems and ROVs and Offshore Survey – and every one of our five regional sections. Naturally our principal concern is safety – that is the golden thread that runs through all of our work.

“As was made clear at our own DP Conference in May this year, we have some very definite messages to spread at both these events:

Data IMCA has received on DP events shows the industry is becoming less safe. All are encouraged to submit details of DP events to increase the data that is being analysed and thus provide important lessons from which to learn
·       There is a need to increase the number of individuals going through the DP accreditation process
·       The development of shallow water guidelines is required and IMCA will focus on this
·       A review of the proposed objectives for the DP Committee will be conducted based on attendee feedback.
“We look forward to updating delegates on progress at these autumn events; and will be covering them in detail next year on 9-10 May in Amsterdam at the IMCA DP Conference – registration is already open at
