IMCA relaunches environmental sustainability self-assessment tool

The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) is pleased to announce the launch of its updated Environmental Sustainability Self-Assessment (ESSA) Tool, developed by IMCA’s Environmental Sustainability Committee.

The tool represents a key step in promoting sustainable practices across our industry and benchmarking Members’ collective progress against IMCA’s Code of Practice on Environmental Sustainability.

The ESSA Tool is now available to complete via the IMCA website here.

First released in 2021, the online ESSA Tool builds on the principles outlined in IMCA’s Code of Practice on Environmental Sustainability (IMCA ES001), scoring Members based on the information provided. Results are compared with anonymised information from other users, with results hosted on a dedicated Power BI dashboard, and can be tracked over time to demonstrate progress against corporate sustainability objectives.

About the self-assessment tool

The ESSA Tool is an online resource designed to help IMCA Member companies:

  • Evaluate their performance against environmental sustainability criteria based on IMCA’s recommended code of practice.
  • Reflect on environmental and climate-related practices, highlighting strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Benchmark their results against anonymised industry averages, once sufficient members have contributed.

How it works

  • The assessment consists of structured questions and typically takes 45-60 minutes to complete.
  • We encourage members to complete the assessment as a collaborative effort across business units to ensure accuracy and collective ownership.
  • Participants receive their individual score immediately and, over time, gain access to industry benchmarking insights.

Why your participation matters

By taking part, members will:

  • Benchmark performance against industry peers,
  • Demonstrate alignment with IMCA’s Code of Practice on Environmental Sustainability,
  • Identify where resources should be dedicated for maximum impact.
  • Strengthen teamwork and clarify roles by involving colleagues across business units.
  • Stay ahead of emerging requirements, with new sections included in 2025 on the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the IMO’s GHG Strategy.
  • Help IMCA tailor guidance, training, and resources to better support Members, informed by aggregated results.

Most importantly, broad engagement will:

  • Provide a robust foundation for industry benchmarking and knowledge-sharing.
  • Showcase IMCA members’ collective commitment to sustainability leadership in the marine contracting sector.

The ESSA Tool is available now on the IMCA website. Anonymised results and insights will be shared with members at the IMCA Global Summit.

We encourage every IMCA Member to participate.
