IMCA Skills
Below you'll find some of the most extensively asked question about IMCA Skills and about the recent migration of EdApp to our IMCA Skills DP CPD platform.
If your question is not answered below please contact our support team on [email protected].
Currently, only the IMCA Dynamic Positioning CPD programme has launched in our new learning platform. For more details, see IMCA DP CPD.
Later this year, we will be introducing additional learning content and features to IMCA Skills. Members will receive announcements as these are launched, or you can bookmark this page and check back for news.
The Diving CPD programme will be migrated to IMCA Skills later this year but continues as a separate service for now. All users will be notified of plans well in advance, and will be fully supported through the migration.
Currently, only DP CPD users are able to access IMCA Skills. There is no content available for other users.
The same ‘IMCA Account’ login is used across the IMCA website, services portal, shop and now IMCA Skills too. If you don’t already have one, you can create it via the login screen (but will currently need DP CPD access first to access IMCA Skills).
If you previously accessed IMCA DP CPD using EdApp, you should create a new IMCA Account with the same email address and a new password. If you wish to change your email address, please contact us first so that we can update your records, ensure any prior learning history is linked, and avoid potential data conflicts.
Certificates – When you complete a course in IMCA Skills, you can download a certificate as the last activity in the course. You can access all your certificates via the Profile page (click your photograph or initials top right). IMCA Skills certificates include a QR code, so if you share your certificate, it can be verified securely online.
Badges – IMCA Skills also provides digital badges, which are available in your profile for new courses and for those migrated into the platform. You can download badges from your ‘Manage badges’ page (via your Profile). Digital badges are PNG files using the Open Badges standard, which means each file contains embedded data that allows achievements to be verified securely on the IMCA Skills website. You can also store this badge in any Open Badges–compatible digital backpack (such as badgr.io) and verify it using external services like badgecheck.io (separate terms may apply to these services).
No, IMCA Skills is available to any individual wishing to access our professional learning and development content for the offshore marine industry. You can register for an IMCA Account with your own personal email address.
We recommend IMCA DP CPD as the best way of completing the CPD requirement of Nautical Institute DP certificate revalidation.
DP CPD Migration - Accessing DP CPD
DP CPD users can now log in to IMCA Skills with an 'IMCA Account', which allows access to the IMCA website, services portal, shop and now our learning platform too. If you haven't yet created an account, you can do so via the login screen.
If you are new to IMCA DP CPD, you can register via our services portal.
If you were previously registered with EdApp, this is a separate login. You should register with the same email address as for EdApp and a new password. If you wish to change your email address, please contact us first so that your records are updated and linked. Once logged in, you will find your previous learning history migrated to IMCA Skills.
If you have an email address linked to an IMCA member company, that will automatically be recognised based on the email domain, which will give you additional access to IMCA services.
In IMCA Skills, current access is via ‘My courses’, top left in the top menu.
Any previous course completion information, including digital badges, can be accessed via the Profile page (click your photograph or initials top right).
If you have full access to the IMCA DP CPD programme, you can access your next module via ‘My courses’ in the IMCA Skills menu (you may need to click into the 'IMCA DP programme' entry first).
Unless you have subscribed to the IMCA Dynamic Positioning CPD programme, access is based on 12-month module access previously purchased through the Nautical Institute. While previous completion shows within your profile, expired modules will not appear in 'My courses'. If you wish to renew your access (which would provide full access to modules 1-6 now plus 7-8 as they are released during 2026), you can do so via our services portal.
Apps for Android and iOS are currently being finalised and will be available soon, including the ability to work offline. In the meantime, the web interface of IMCA Skills is mobile optimised and can be used on mobile devices.
IMCA asks users to verify their identity when enrolling in its certification and CPD programmes. This helps ensure that certification/CPD/learning records are assigned to a verified individual - important when we're dealing with safety critical roles.
Two verification options are available:
• Automated verification using the secure Stripe service (IMCA receives the photograph, verified first and last names and date of birth) – processed instantly unless there is a significant difference to the name you registered with
• Upload direct to IMCA for manual verification – these are processed regularly but only during London working hours.
Names are displayed on certificates and when verifying certification, which must be prompted by the holder presenting their certificate or badge to a third party. Otherwise, no data is shared by IMCA. All data is securely stored, and retained in accordance with the IMCA document and data retention policy.
Modules and Courses
No, the IMCA DP CPD content successfully adopted by over 10,000 users in EdApp is exactly what you’ll find in IMCA Skills.Over time, we will continue to maintain the DP modules, updating them to reflect industry guidance and technological developments, while also taking advantage of new features in the IMCA Skills platform to offer you the best learning experience.
All current modules are available within the annual DP CPD subscription.
Which modules you need to complete will depend on initial your certification date (new users may not need to start at Module 1, but the early modules will be available to you for review and reference).
To better reflect the requirements in the latest edition of the Nautical Institute certification standard, our numbered modules are now aligned to specific years’ revalidation criteria. As a results, modules 7-8 have been temporarily withdrawn and will be re-released this year.
• 2024 revalidation – Modules 1 and 2 – available now*
• 2025 revalidation – Modules 3 and 4 – available now*
• 2026 revalidation – Modules 5 and 6 – available now
• 2027 revalidation – Module 7 (launching April 2026) and Module 8 (launching October 2026)
Note that CPD is continuing professional development so modules should be completed on a regular basis. When revalidating DP operator certificates, the Nautical Institute may refuse to accept CPD completion certificates (from any provider) that have been issued in quick succession rather than aligned to the above.
There is no IMCA requirement to delay (or obstruction in the IMCA Skills platform that delays) completing prior CPD modules. However, CPD is continuing professional development so modules should be completed on a regular basis. Once up to date, you should normally complete each new module before the next is released (one module every six months).
When revalidating DP operator certificates, the Nautical Institute may refuse to accept CPD completion certificates (from any provider) that have been issued in quick succession rather than aligned to the annual requirements.
Payments and Invoices
An annual subscription to the IMCA Dynamic Positioning CPD programme includes full access to all current modules – currently modules 1-6, with 7/8 due for release in April/October 2026, building to a collection of ten modules for the five-year revalidation cycle.
If you hold a DP certificate from the Nautical Institute, you will need to complete modules in accordance with the NI’s revalidation requirements (which modules and when you must complete them).
All current modules will remain available to you for review and reference while you maintain your annual subscription. This includes the latest versions of referenced IMCA guidance as any updates are issued.
Modules are now accessed as part of an annual subscription to the IMCA DP CPD programme. This is a lower cost compared to purchasing individual modules as previously offered.
Many subscribers have purchased all previous modules through the previous Nautical Institute/EdApp arrangement. For those who had not passed Module 3, we ask for an additional payment to reflect the full range of content available within the IMCA DP programme, but at a significantly lower cost than would have been required to purchase those modules individually.
Modules purchased from the Nautical Institute have been migrated to IMCA Skills.
If you have purchased module access from the NI but did not complete one or modules in EdApp, they are now ready for you in IMCA Skills for the duration of your original purchase.
If you purchased DP CPD modules via the Nautical Institute, you will need to contact them regarding any refunds that may be available to you under the terms and conditions in place at that time. If you were unable to complete your module in EdApp before the transition, you won’t need a refund as the module is now available to you within IMCA Skills.
Document Access
IMCA Guidance and other related documents are now available to IMCA Skills users through our main website, ensuring you can always access the latest updates.
You'll find the files listed in your 'Briefcase', accessed through the ‘<’ icon (white text on a blue semi-circle) at the right of the screen while in each course. This will reveal a new panel to the right listing the documents for that module.
Simply log in to our main website with the same IMCA Account that you use on the Skills site to download.
Certificates and Sharing Progress
Certificates – When you complete a course in IMCA Skills, you can download a certificate as the last activity in the course. You can access all your certificates via the Profile page (click your photograph or initials top right). IMCA Skills certificates include a QR code, so if you share your certificate, it can be verified securely online.
If you completed modules in EdApp, you were advised prior to the migration to download your certificates. It was not possible to migrate certificates to IMCA Skills in their previous format.
Nautical Institute Accreditation and Revalidation
Yes. IMCA DP CPD remains accredited by the NI for revalidation of DP operator certificates.
This is still the only CPD scheme that is built using the expert knowledge of IMCA – our Members and secretariat team – and the library of technical guidance and incident data spanning multiple decades. Modules include downloadable copies of relevant IMCA guidance documents for your own professional use.
We’ll still be submitting completion data direct to the NI (for existing users and new users opting in), to make your NI revalidation process as smooth as possible.
Your Alexis login remains valid for other interactions with the NI.Starting a new moduleis now be a simple process through IMCA Skills, instead of using the Alexis platform and EdApp as previously.
Any previous DP CPD purchase and completion data should still be available to you through the Alexis platform. If you have any questions about this, please contact the NI directly.
EdApp is being withdrawn and will eventually be retired from app stores and the web, with your data due for deletion. You may still be able to access EdApp, but no further progress data can be migrated to IMCA Skills, Do not continue with any modules that may still be accessible within EdApp – log in to IMCA Skills instead.
