Piracy is a threat to all sizes of vessels in some parts of the world. The more we know, the more we can minimise the risks and react to dangerous situations – or avoid them altogether.

IMCA recommends BMP 5 as the current standard for approaches to dealing with piracy. It includes effective measures for the protection of crew and vessels while transiting locations such as the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Indian Ocean, and the Arabian Sea. A second version has been produced covering the seas off West Africa.

Our video below (IMCA HSS028) is intended as guidance for personnel working onboard vessels operating in high risk areas and covers a range of measures intended to compliment company anti-piracy procedures. It also discusses the steps that should be taken if the vessel is boarded by pirates and the crew is taken hostage.
