IMCA’s Security Committee, first formed in 2005 as the Security Task Force, is a sub-committee of the Health, Safety and Security Core Committee. The Security Committee meets quarterly to discuss current matters of concern to members on maritime security, including piracy and criminality on the high seas, actions of hostile governments, terrorism, activism and the environment itself. The members of the committee can be seen here: HSS Security Committee at IMCA.
Working with our Members and joint collaborations with other industry associations we have developed a range of resources available in our Technical Library to ensure information on threats to maritime security and crew safety concerns is communicated to our Members and the wider industry.
IMCA is represented on the Joint Industry Security Group (JISG), a group of trade associations including BIMCO, Intercargo, Intertanko, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF) and the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). The JISG exists to gather and disseminate information on maritime security for its various members.
The JISG is responsible for the BMP (“best management practice”) series of documents addressing good practice on maritime security in various areas of the world. IMCA recommends the use of BMP which can be downloaded here.”
IMCA through its observer status at the IMO is able to gain further access to up-to-date information about regulatory and other developments that pertain to maritime security. This work is handled by IMCA’s Head of Legal and Regulatory Affairs, Margaret Fitzgerald.
Our Safety Promotional Materials which includes security and online courses, provide the tools for Members to confidently strengthen their own Safety and Security cultures.
