Supporting the development of offshore wind in Taiwan
Published on 27 February 2023
Around 25 representatives from developers, contractors, suppliers, and regulators – all active in offshore wind in Taiwan – attended the inaugural China Sea focal group meeting held by IMCA on 8 February 2023.
Taiwan has ambitious plans for offshore wind, with targets for 40GW to 55GW of production – and half of that to be built by 2035 – to support their commitment to reach Net Zero by 2050.
Aiming to influence and shape the development of safe and efficient marine operations in the waters off Taiwan to support the delivery of these ambitions, the group’s first meeting was led by Iain Grainger (Head of Energy Transition) and Rhys Jones (Technical Advisor, Marine Renewable Energy).
Joining them from IMCA were Jason Veerasingam (director of client engagement, Asia Pacific) and Darren Brunton (Chair of the AsiaPacific Regional Committee). Attendees also heard from local G+ representative Caren Hsao who shared an update on the soon to be updated G+ Integrated Offshore Emergency Response guidelines.

The group has identified common matters of interest for those operating in Taiwan, such as the necessary guidance that will be required to operate safely, as well as building awareness and encouraging the adoption of existing IMCA standards.
Attendees agreed on a range of immediate issues to explore that will be of interest to marine contractors and others working in offshore wind in the Taiwan. This includes vessel assurance (using IMCA’s eCMID and MISW systems), emergency response, and diving safety.
Iain Grainger said: “Taiwan is seen as an offshore wind leader in Asia, and getting involved in our group is a great opportunity to shape its safe and efficient delivery.”
“Building on IMCA’s proud legacy in improving performance across the marine contracting industry, and our significant technical expertise and existing suite of best practice standards and guidelines, we’re excited to be bringing the industry together in the region to support the development of this emerging market for offshore wind.”
IMCA is present at the Wind Energy Asia Conference, 8-10 March 2023 at the Kaohsiung Exhibition Center, Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. The next meeting of the focal group will take place in Kaohsiung during the conference on 9 March Please contact IMCA today if you would like to join the focal group meeting or meet us in person at the Conference to find out more.
