Summary

A total of 51 incidents were made available for the study. 35 were directly reported to IMCA on commencement of the study with a further 16 reported during the analysis.

In total, 36 vessels provided data, which is about the same as 2002 where 38 vessels reported incidents. However, the total number of incidents is less, down from 64 to 51, which slightly decreases the average incidents per vessel to 1.42, from 1.68. The total number of DP vessels in the world is increasing year on year but it is never certain that zero reports from a vessel means that nothing of note has happened or that the vessel has not been working, or not working on DP.

In this report the ‘Initiating Event’ is the trigger that sets off the incident chain of events. This is the same as for the earlier years where the ‘Primary’ or ‘Main Cause’ had the same meaning. ‘Initiating Event’ conveys the meaning more clearly. The ‘Secondary Cause’ is selected as the predominant secondary cause, when sometimes there are several contributing.
